Thus, most only attend church at weddings, funerals or christenings.

Regarding religion and media, I've always found it weird that during public addresses U.S. politicans refer to god quite a lot. Around here that would be tantamount to a political suicide.Jussihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07060139530620407423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-66748798165223291022007-11-14T08:11:00.000-05:002007-11-14T08:11:00.000-05:00Jhuuuskon, hasn't the media blamed lack of religio...Jhuuuskon, hasn't the media blamed lack of religion, lack of faith yet, on the school shootings in Finland?

If things are wrong with the youth, that is how the US media would explain it.Baconeaterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11134934827966299989noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-58100003204720166352007-11-13T15:53:00.000-05:002007-11-13T15:53:00.000-05:00I dreaded to see my mother the next friday. That's how Jehova's witnesses like herself tend to explain the things they don't quite understand.

She said nothing.

I guess there are some things so evil even the most die-hard theists can't chalk up to satan/equivalent testing our faith.

So... The international attention has calmed down, the respectable finnish media are awaiting real news to report and the tabloids are grasping at straws to make dramatic headlines. It's almost been a week.

The same day the shootings occured two other schools received threats that "they would be next". By sunday both wiseguys had been caught by the the police and they both cried out that they thought it was a good joke.

Yeah. I'm not exactly proud of my fellow countrymen's sense of humour. In general, around here nothing is sacred when it comes to cracking jokes about concurrent events, but even the most libertarian of us would probably agree that they went too far.

The parents who have been ever-increasingly ignoring their children for the past couple decades are now suddenly very concerned if their children will be safe at school. Red Cross's crisis hotline has been swamped with phonecalls from concerned parents afraid that some loonie will gun their kids down.

Having observed the finnnish youth's alcohol consumption both first hand and from statistics I dare say it's not at school whey their children are at danger. I feel that under the watchful eye of a teacher is where they actually are safest.

Being raised by a Jehova's witness mother and a mostly absent atheist father I have no firsthand experience what normal parents are like but right now it seems to me 'hypocrit' is the word I'm after.

A PR rep for the company operating the social networking site the gunman had used to publish his manifesto on pretty much summed the wednesday up. He said (liberally translated) "this really tells more about the present state of youth mental healthcare in our country than anything else". I have to agree. Our kids aren't alright.

The parents' panic will subside eventually and hopefully some of them will realise the ignorant ways they've been treating their children in the years gone by. I just hope that this tragic event would bring attention and permanent improvement to the poor state of our youth's mental health.Jussihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07060139530620407423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-59036070577249805582007-11-09T13:16:00.000-05:002007-11-09T13:16:00.000-05:00Maybe demons--but atheists probably don't believe ...Maybe demons--but atheists probably don't believe in them either.Ordehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03710970513424387777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-27107348208289076412007-11-08T21:50:00.000-05:002007-11-08T21:50:00.000-05:00I felt really bad about it afterwards, but honestl...I felt really bad about it afterwards, but honestly, my first reaction on hearing this story was, "They still have guns in Finland?"

Also, from the sounds of it, he got his influence more from history class than science class. Every time someone talks about killing off the "least fit" I want to scream. Fitness just means how many children you have in your lifetime! Technically an AIDs infected crackhead prostitute with five illegitimate children is more fit than a childless Nobel Prize winner!

Still, very tragic.Basioranahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03735917076649770499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-35209957832259345112007-11-08T12:44:00.000-05:002007-11-08T12:44:00.000-05:00The way this is going to cause a bit of a storm in...The way this is going to cause a bit of a storm in a teacup in the US ("See what teaching evilutionism leads too!") is very reminiscent of the Ismail AX flap (where they tried the pin the VT massacre on Islam).

This guy was a nut, so was the South Korean. He was functioning in society.

Jonny eh, I am jumping to conclusions based on the evidence available to me. This has little to do with me being a rationalist or atheist.
But this guy didn't just snap. I've known people who I have said to myself that this guy creeps me out and it wouldn't surprise me if one day this person became a serial killer.
Read Pharyngula's post I linked under the video. He explains why he did it.
Sure, I might be too brutal on the parents, but I've been watching a lot of Dexter lately:)Baconeaterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11134934827966299989noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-73360664555456664562007-11-08T08:50:00.000-05:002007-11-08T08:50:00.000-05:00Why are you blaming the parents? For all we know they did their best to control an insane and homicidal child.

While trying to defend something that idiots would try to blame (in this case evolution), you have decided to lay the blame on someone else, who might be innocent.

Check this:
http://gamepolitics.com/2007/02/23/penny-arcade-receives-letter-from-alleged-stepmother-of-killer-teen/

As an atheist and skeptic you should be comfortable in saying "I don't know why he did what he did, or if it could have been prevented, we don't have all the information yet"Jonathan Abramshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10822775953941941191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10199920.post-19205093599753929112007-11-08T03:03:00.000-05:002007-11-08T03:03:00.000-05:00We cannot listen to the rantings of an insane mind...We cannot listen to the rantings of an insane mind and then conclude that whatever that insane person believes in must be discredited. An insane person may or may not make perfectly logical arguments. That in itself doesn't justify the insane person's actions or behaviour. For example, people often say Hitler was a vegetarian, therefore vegans cannot be OK.Lexcenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17856993035719777231noreply@blogger.com
